EU's handling of JCPOA pilloried at Brussels conference

Completely useless, spineless and divided; that is how, speaking at this conference in Brussels, Middle East affairs expert Joost Hiltermann described the EU in the context of its efforts to try and prevent Donald Trump from completely destroying the 2015 Iran nuclear deal which was endorsed by the United Nations.

The conference was organised to discuss US-Iran tensions in the wake of the assassination by Washington of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani and Tehran's missile strikes on US bases in response. All of the experts agree, there may have been a pause but there has been no de-escalation.

In light of the tensions, Trump wants to increase the West's military presence in the Middle East. He has threatened to place sanctions on Iraq if the country's government forces the US to leave. It follows a vote passed in the Iraqi parliament calling for foreign troops to go home. While Iran can survive US sanctions, apparently Iraq could not.

At the conference one expert described the United States as a waning superpower with a short attention span. He said the US does not have a strategy in the Middle East and long-term Tehran has the advantage over Washington as it knows the region inside out.
